biography

After training to be a Scenic Artist at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 1995, I worked with and learnt from acclaimed muralist Robin Archer and painted scenic art for

companies such as the English National Opera and Sydney Theatre Company, which prepared me for two seasons as Head of Scenic Art at Perth Theatre in Scotland.

Upon emigrating to Australia in 2001, I found work as a

Scenic Artist for the Australian Ballet and with Scenic Studios, painting revivals, modern one act and more traditional three act ballets along with commercial musicals including Wicked, Jersey Boys, The Producers, Saturday Night Fever and

Phantom of the Opera.

While in Melbourne I also painted murals for both residential and commercial spaces, and created a range of high quality paint effects and finishes for clients including The Museum of South Australia, Melbourne Aquarium and Mercedes Benz.

I painted ground breaking animatronic dragons with the award winning Creature Technology Company on DreamWorks'

How to Train Your Dragon, Arena Spectacular.

In 2011 a portrait I made of Australian singer songwriter Paul Dempsey for the Archibald Prize was chosen for the inaugural EMI Art Project in Sydney.

Back in England I worked for seven years at the Royal Opera House as one of the lead scenic artists,

my last year was in a managerial role.

Along with this I painted murals for Turner Prize winning artist Chris Ofili in New York, Chicago, London and Venice, and painted some large canvases for acclaimed artist Goshka Macuga.

I have been a visiting lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama teaching about sign writing for the stage and also drawing and painting techniques used to create architecture and perspective on back drops.

Before leaving ROH in 2019 I painted a backdrop with John Macfalane for the New York Metropolitan Opera’s production of Der Fliegende Hollander.

After this I made a mural for Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium and worked as a scenic painter on Disney’s Cruella. Then went on to paint props for Marvel’s The Eternals and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

I first worked with Stuart in Australia and since his return to the UK on many productions for the Royal Opera House, the most recent being the new production of Swan Lake for the Royal Ballet.

I am an easel  painter and theatre designer and all of my theatre work contains large painted images. In these days of projection and digital image it is increasingly hard to find a brilliant and dedicated scene painter and Stuart is just that. He has the essential ability to climb inside the image and brilliantly produce the painting on a large scale and he is totally reliable and meticulous in his preparation, drawing out and execution.

He has become a totally trusted colleague. I have great respect for him and it is always such a great pleasure to work together.

I worked with Stuart for some years in the U.K. painting murals in large private houses. He was an ideal colleague, working swiftly and with great skill and discretion in our clients' homes.

He was capable adapting to the demands of the many styles that were required of us and contributed hugely to the success of our commissions.

I have personally known Mr Hall for over 20 years and he has always been someone you can depend on. Honesty, integrity, hard work and determination all come to mind when talking about Stuart.

The Tottenham Hotspur project we commissioned Stuart to deliver was one close to my heart. The project was very demanding, he had to deal directly with Tracey Levy. Stuart took all this in his stride and delighted everyone with his professionalism and skill. The clients and my expectations have been exceeded and I look forward to working with Mr Hall in the future.
